1,7-Octadiene(CAS#3710-30-3)
Brief introduction
1,7-Octadiene is an organic compound with a colorless liquid.
1,7-octadiene has many important uses. It is an important chemical intermediate that can be used to synthesize a wide range of compounds, such as synthetic rubber, plastics, adhesives, antioxidants, and solvents. 1,7-octadiene can also be used in the preparation of fragrances and flavors, as well as as as solvents and cleaning agents.
There are several methods for the preparation of 1,7-octadiene. The commonly used method is obtained through the transformation of vegetable oils. The fatty acids in vegetable oil are dehydrated, decarboxylated and other reactions to obtain corresponding non-olefins, and in the presence of appropriate catalysts, 1,7-octadiene is further hydrogenated to obtain 1,7-octadiene.
It is a combustible liquid that burns easily and should be kept away from open flames and high temperatures. Contact with oxygen may cause explosion, and prolonged contact with oxygen or high temperature should be avoided. Appropriate protective equipment, such as protective gloves and glasses, should be worn when using it, and avoid contact with skin and eyes. During storage and transportation, exposure to sunlight or contact with oxidizing agents should be avoided.
Application
1,7-Octadiene (CAS 3710-30-3) is a high-purity, linear α,ω-diolefin containing two terminal vinyl groups. It serves as a versatile crosslinking monomer, chain extender, and reactive intermediate in polymer chemistry and organic synthesis. In the production of specialty polyolefins, 1,7-octadiene is incorporated into ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) elastomers to introduce unsaturated crosslinking sites, significantly improving mechanical strength, heat aging resistance, and compression set. It also acts as a branching agent in polyethylene and polypropylene syntheses, modifying melt flow and processability. In silicone rubber formulations, 1,7-octadiene functions as a grafting and curing agent. In organic synthesis, it is a valuable building block for ring-closing metathesis (RCM) to form macrocycles, as well as for hydroboration, epoxidation, and Michael addition reactions. Additionally, it is used to prepare long-chain diacids, diamines, and specialty surfactants. The high purity ensures consistent reactivity in sensitive polymerization and fine chemical processes.
