Application
2-Vinyl-1,3-dioxolane is a colorless liquid, synthesized via the acid-catalyzed acetalization of acrolein with ethylene glycol. It is a versatile cyclic acetal monomer used as a reactive diluent in coatings, adhesives, and sealants, where it undergoes free-radical polymerization to form stable polyethers. This monomer is polymerized to polyvinylidene dioxolane (PVD), which can be further saponified and processed into polyacrylonitrile. In copolymerization, it enhances the thermal stability, flexibility, and mechanical strength of polymer systems. As an intermediate, its vinyl group undergoes cross-coupling reactions while the dioxolane ring enables hydrolysis to unsaturated carbonyls.
