1. Properties:
- Appearance: Oleamidopropyl Betaine is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid, typically supplied at 30%–40% active content.
- Solubility: Freely soluble in water, dilute acid solutions, and dilute alkaline solutions. Exhibits excellent compatibility with anionic, cationic, nonionic, and amphoteric surfactants.
- Chemical Properties: As a zwitterionic amphoteric surfactant, Oleamidopropyl Betaine possesses both positive and negative charges within the same molecule. It exhibits excellent foam boosting, thickening, antistatic, and conditioning properties across a wide pH range (acidic to alkaline). It demonstrates strong hard water resistance, low irritation to skin and eyes, and excellent biodegradability (>98% degradation rate).
2. Applications:
- Personal Care & Cosmetics: Used as a mild cleansing agent, foam booster, viscosity builder, hair conditioning agent, and skin conditioning agent in shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, baby care products, and shaving foams. It reduces the irritation of anionic surfactants while imparting a smooth, silky feel to hair and skin.
- Household & Industrial Cleaning: Applied in premium dishwashing liquids and hand soaps to reduce irritation, enhance foam stability, and improve detergency.
- Textile Auxiliaries: Functions as a fabric softener and antistatic agent, improving fiber feel and reducing static adsorption while promoting uniform dye penetration.
- Oil & Gas Field Chemicals: Serves as a viscoelastic surfactant (VES) for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), self-diverting acid main agent, thickening agent in clean fracturing fluids, and oil displacement agent. Exhibits ultra-low interfacial tension with crude oil (reaching 10⁻³ mN·m⁻¹) and strong salt/hard water resistance.
- Leather Processing: Acts as a leather softener and emulsifier, lubricating leather fiber structure and improving finished product softness and glossiness.
3. Preparation Method:
- Laboratory Method: Synthesized through the reaction of oleic acid with dimethylaminopropylamine to form an amide intermediate, followed by quaternization with sodium chloroacetate or chloroacetic acid.
- Industrial Process: Industrial production follows a similar two-step route—amidation of oleic acid with N,N-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine, followed by quaternization of the resulting tertiary amine with sodium chloroacetate under controlled conditions. The raw materials are predominantly derived from natural fatty acids, and the production process can be optimized for high purity and environmental compliance.

- Oleamidopropyl Betaine is a low-irritation, mild surfactant suitable for sensitive skin and baby care formulations.
