Formaldehyde(CAS#50-00-0)
quality
Colorless transparent liquid. It can be arbitrarily miscible with water, ethanol and acetone. It can be gradually oxidized to formic acid in the air, and it is a strong reducing agent. Its vapor forms an explosive mixture with air, which causes combustion and explosion in case of open flame and high heat energy. In general commodities, 10%~12% methanol is added as an inhibitor, otherwise polymerization will occur.
Method
Methanol vapor is prepared by dehydrogenation of methanol by passing copper or silver catalysts at 300 °C. Formaldehyde gas absorbs 36%~40% of water, which is formaldehyde solution. The commercially available formaldehyde solution is distilled to remove impurities, and methanol is supplemented as the reagent formaldehyde solution.
use
It is used as a reagent for the determination of ammonium salts and amino acids, and as a fixative for various preparations in microscopic analysis. It is also used as a sterilization disinfectant, biological specimen impregnation, and reducing agent. It is also an important organic raw material.
security
rat oral LD50: 800mg/kg; rabbit transdermal LD50: 270mg/kg. It is strongly irritating to mucous membranes, upper respiratory tract, eyes and skin. Precautions should be taken against possible exposure to its vapors. Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat sources. Protect from direct sunlight. Keep the container tightly sealed. It should be stored separately from oxidants, acids, and alkalis.
Application
Formaldehyde (CAS 50-00-0) is a fundamental industrial chemical and key building block for the production of numerous resins, polymers, and specialty chemicals. It serves as the primary raw material for urea-formaldehyde (UF), phenol-formaldehyde (PF), and melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resins, which are extensively used in wood adhesives, plywood, particleboard, molding compounds, coatings, and textile finishing agents. As a highly effective disinfectant and preservative, formaldehyde is formulated into sterilizing solutions for hospital equipment, animal housing, and fish farming. It is also a critical intermediate in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals (e.g., methenamine, tropinone), agrochemicals (pesticides, fungicides), and industrial biocides. In histology and embalming, formalin (37% aqueous formaldehyde) is the standard tissue fixative and preservative. As a versatile C1 building block, it participates in condensation, crosslinking, and polymerization reactions, enabling the production of pentaerythritol, hexamethylenetetramine, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), and various polyols. Xinchem offers high-purity formaldehyde (methanol-stabilized) with flexible custom synthesis and contract manufacturing capabilities. Our production scales from R&D samples to commercial tanker volumes, supported by comprehensive quality documentation (COA, MSDS) and global logistics.
